A Herd of Goats and Other interpreting Snippets
Snippets from interpreting:
Goats: I’m interpreting along. It’s in-depth analysis type of stuff in a high level setting. This requires from me intense concentration to first capture the meaning in English and then turn it into a comprehensible form of ASL.
Suddenly they start talking about a herd of goats. The sign for goats, in my opinion, is quite funny anyway. I’m mid-sign interpreting ‘goat’ when I double-check myself. Did he really say ‘goats’?? Not quite what I was expecting from the analyzer. The deaf person raises the eyebrows a bit at the pause adding some comic relief and I lose it; giggling internally, trying to keep a straight face.
For Loops: The topic is computer software engineering. Get done with the job. The deaf person approaches me. “What is your background?” Didn’t think I knew anything about computer software, eh? Bring that girl back–(got my business card). She knows what a ‘For Loop’ is. Imagine interpreting if you didn’t know what that meant. What are you hearing?? ’4 loops’? A name: ‘Forlups’? ‘For a loop’? You get the idea.
East Coast: They use the sign ‘name’ for the word ‘mention’. That’s just weird.
East side. West side.
