Aida from the Doha Debates spoke to my Arabic students and two faculty members this past week. Students were inspired to debate. This should be an interesting year for dialogue about the Middle East in both English and Arabic.
The debates are not carried on TV in the United States. BBC sponsors the program. Students from Qatar’s universities attend and topics are varied. Here are some of the more recent motions:
- Monday, May 24, 2010. Motion: This House believes woman are superior to men. Result: Motion carried 67% — 33%.
- Monday, March 15, 2010. Doha Debates Special Event: Hamas meets Fatah.
- Wednesday, November 16, 2005. Doha Debates Special Event: Bill Clinton.
- Monday, April 16, 2010. Motion: This House believes Barack Obama is too weak to make peace in the Middle East. Result: Motion carried 58%-42%.
The next debate: Oct 11, 2010. Motion: This House believes France is right to ban the face veil. It will be broadcast on BBC World News on Oct 16-17.
