Murfreesboro and the Islamic Center

I went down to Murfreesboro, Tennessee for Thanksgiving thinking I would run into a herd of extreme Christians I’ve seen on the news. And indeed, it seemed that the size of the cross around their neck or staked into their yard signaled the size of their religious devotion. Some of those pendants must have added a few extra pounds to the scale.
Birds
Nonetheless, my good friend Nellene, with her chef-husband and “thankyou”-saying 1.8 year old boy diverted my attention to their new brick home surrounded by trees in a quiet cul-de-sac. Forget the Christians, right, when you’re in a quiet home, sitting next to the open windows and drafts of cool and warm air are flustering intermittently into the room. But not only that, there must have been a sea of birds–like a menagerie outside in the forest that day. The density of their beak-sounds, evidence of the backdrop of a curtain of flocks in the forest. And once or twice a bird came close into our zoom, enough to see its colors; the blue one, a blue bird; the red one, a cardinal. Towards night fall the drip drop of rain slowly dotted then dashed the deck.

(This is a picture of the church next to the Islamic Center building plot. They are happy with their neighbors. The street is in a lonely, low-traffic area.)
The Islamic Center
But I gotta also talk about the Islamic Center because it is national news. We stopped at the current Islamic Center just after Friday prayer. Speaking Arabic, and promising my peaceful intentions, we heard from a professor at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) about the project, hopes for the future, the Islamic community’s desire for peaceful coexistence with their neighbors. Most Boro-ans (as in Murfreesboro-people) are in favor of the Center, I discovered. People have donated funds and professional services to help make it a success. There are only a small few but key people who want to thwart the building project. Interestingly enough, they use terror to get what they want-terror being exactly what they are afraid of happening. Gun shots across the plot, dousing the property with gasoline and setting machinery on fire. I hope the Islamic Center will be successful. I donated, too.
