I was reading through Facebook stati this morning. Several people mentioned the weather which for the most part seems pretty cold out there. Loads of snow in some areas. I have a friend, though, living in Hawaii who had to mention she still wears flip-flops out and about. Rough life.
I, for one, am definitely not used to humid-cold. So here is my gradual warming-up process in 10 steps:
1-Wear lots of layers–doesn’t work
2-Wrap a scarf around my neck twice–a little better but then what about your head
3-Shiver really hard–hmmm, I wonder if shivering vigorously works your abs
4-Avoid going out at all–wait a second, gotta eat which means going to work, darn it
5-Rice Warmer–you heat it in the microwave and put it next to your feet. Yummmm
6-Hot Herbal Tea–my innards get a little warmer at least
7-Hot Showers–it works until you have to get out.
8-Run–if you’re in it, don’t be out very long, right?
9-Have someone pick you up–Warning label: this can take a toll on your relationships.
10-Google “best thermals”–It took a few days to arrive but I now have these super awesome, camping-in-the-klondike thermals, and can somewhat tolerate the cold, and yes, I’m getting warm…er.
My favorite weather joke/experience of the season so far:
I’m leaving work downtown from a government building. A man just entering the doors looks at me from across the room and says, “Have a good day. Wait…where’s your hat?” I reply-half smiling, “I’m planning to get one.” “Today,” he says firmly and with his eyebrows slightly raised. …ok

This totally gave me flashbacks to my first winter in D.C. I was walking with some coworkers and the wind was blowing so fiercely and I said it was “bone-chilling”…my supervisor repeated that all winter long about how I thought everything was “bone-chilling.” But it really is colder than winter in Utah even though we get far more snow here!
