Year in Review

National Turkey

This has been a big year for me. Here are some of the highlights by topic:

Guys: It seems that a lot of the people who read this blog are interested in this topic so I’ll start with it. This has definitely been a year full of dating especially since I moved here to DC. I was dating after my first week here and it has been pretty steady ever since then; several different guys and several times each including a boyfriend, etc. We’ve had a lot of fun.  I don’t like to give a lot of details publicly about dating but I did make an exception for my last boyfriend because he started talking marriage and I felt it would be good for people to know I was dating him.

While things have generally been good in this department, I’ve also had an awkward experience. A guy I have known for about a year and a half through Arabic stuff became really angry with me. He’s a nice guy generally. I think we ended up having to interact with each other a whole lot more than we thought. As a single girl, interacting with single guys is very tenuous, like walking on egg shells even, because everything you do or say can so easily be misconstrued or taken further than you mean it. It’s so hard to be nice without causing tension. I’m actually very relieved that he’s angry because now I have an excuse not to talk to him even when normally there would be a social obligation. It might be better if he got married. Good riddance–pick ‘em and get on with it.  I liked him, though–it’s too bad.

But, that whole situation has definitely had a dappening effect on me. I’m not sure about a word to describe it except for “exhaustion”.  They say guys can’t be just friends–if they’re friends with you, you might be on their 3rd or 4th burner, etc.

Whatever the truth is, I’m teetering on two extremes, wanting to never date again and wanting to date more. I’ve been taking the date more approach. Dating in DC is so fun. There is great food, cool shows, exhibits, interesting places to visit outside the area…

Moving: I moved to Washington DC. 6 months later it feels like yesterday and like it’s been a long time at the same time. I really crave diversity and this is the place for difference in people, food, religions, cultures, languages, and the list is long.

Starting my own business: I also started my own business. It’s exciting and somewhat scary at times but I love it. I work a lot from home and go out for jobs. I’m learning a lot and may spend more time on details about it later.

Teaching Arabic: Teaching Arabic here has been fun. I made the ‘class’ into more of an after school Arabic ‘team’ where students are assigned to countries and regions within the Middle East. We are working with teachers and students in Doha, Qatar to debate using TelePresence technology. Even if we ended tomorrow, it has been a great experience. We go to CISCO’s offices at the Ronald Reagan building next to the White House.

Friends: Making tons of new friends here–lots of fun places to visit.
