With great joy I can finally announce that I finished, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.  I read these 754 pages of dense history consumed by the story.  A few minutes ago as Lincoln lay dieing with his cabinet weeping around him at his bedside, I was suprised at how moved I felt in the reading of it.  Doris Kearns Goodwin writes about his life in parallel with his cabinet members’ lives.  Seeing this juxtaposition made me feel like another member of the cabinet sharing intimate moments about his family and the war, his humor and amiability.  I really want to be like him; forgiving, trusting, patient, enduring.

A couple of notes: This book had special meaning to me even before I started it.  First, Doris Kearns Goodwin’s style of writing originally inspired me to write “Japanese Carp” for which I did well in a writing competition.  I like her telling of history by talking about people.  Second, I read the book because I knew Obama had read it before he became president.  I wanted to know what the hupla was about.  You’ll have to read it yourself to find out.

I got a phone call this morning around 9:30am from Washington D.C.  My contacts at Relief International: Schools Online and the State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs wanted me to get on Skype to speak to youth from across Palestine to talk about Obama’s Speech in Cairo.  We spoke to these Palestinian youth for about an hour live fielding comments and questions.

They were generally positive.  Some of the old frustrations are still there of course but the dialogue is changing.  When Obama says he will open up opportunities for exchanges, I know that this is true because we are recipients of these exchanges.  When Obama talks about a student in Kansas talking online in real time to students in Cairo, it was happening between me in Utah and Palestinians in Ramallah almost as he spoke those words.

It’s working.  I believe things are changing.  We’re learning Arabic.  It’s exciting.

Watch the speech.

I have a little extra time so I thought I would write a few posts that have been swirling around in my head.

First, I just found out that my cousin’s parents in-law live on the same street in Kailua where Obama is staying right now and she and her husband have seen him at their country club.  My cousin and her husband as well as their car are searched every time they visit their parents.  That’s fun for me because I’ve been to that country club and know the general area.  My cousin and her family grew up in Hawaii.  We flew out to see her marry her husband on the beach at a hotel near Honolulu.  They are amazing people.  Very cool.
